(New York City) Black gay community leaders and New York politicians unveiled a bold new transit and billboard campaign in Harlem Tuesday aimed at reminding African Americans that gays are part of the larger Black population.
Gay African Americans often feel alienated from the larger Black population.
Many gays are in “denial” leaders say pointing to the “down low” which has helped fuel the AIDS crisis. Those who are out are frequently alienated from their families and during the 2004 election conservative politicians, mainly Republicans, fueled homophobia with denunciations in Black churches of same-sex marriage.
All too often, Black LGBT activists say, violence against gay African Americans is perpetrated by other Blacks.
The ad campaign, by the New York State Black Gay Network, an umbrella organization of nearly a dozen LGBT and AIDS groups, seeks to change perceptions in the community.
“Black gay men have always been a part of every aspect of the Black community, it’s not a matter of acceptance from the community of some foreign presence, it is about acknowledgement, love and respect from our own for us,” said Mark McLaurin, Executive Director of New York State Black Gay Network.
“If we want to stop the spread of HIV, Black gay men need to know that their lives matter in the very communities in which they live.”
Twenty-five years into the HIV epidemic, Black Men who have sex with men remain the group most impacted by the HIV epidemic said McLaurin.
A 2005 five-city Centers for Disease Control study showed that 46 percent of all Black men who have sex with men may already be HIV positive. Other studies have concluded that the stigma of being gay in the Black community remains one of the reasons for high rates of infection among Black MSM.
Launching the campaign Tuesday, the Network unveiled two large billboards at 125th Street & Broadway.
The billboards show groups of young Black men with captions reading “I Am Gay”. During the campaign billboards will be placed in other predominantly Black neighborhoods including Bedford Stuyvesant, Jamaica , Brownsville and East New York.
“We hope that these billboards remind our neighbors, our family members, and religious leaders that we are part of this community,” said McLaurin.
“When you verbally or physically bash Black gay men, you are bashing somebody’s brother, father, friend or lover.”
Black gay men in New York City have been subjected to a rash of attacks and murders. Most recently, Black gay recording artist Kevin Aviance was attacked after leaving a club. Black gay activists say that many more harassment and verbal attacks go unreported.
Among those attending Tuesday’s billboard unveiling were Congressman Charles Rangel (D-NY); Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer; NY City Councilmembers Melissa Mark-Viverito, Robert Jackson and Yvette Clarke and Clarence Patton of the Anti-Violence Project.
